Jack Lemon had as diverse a career as one could ask for, from screwball comedies to the first bromance with Walter Matthau to his heartbreaking turn in "Glengarry Glen Ross." And Kim Novak... Love your summation regarding reasons for love of Film Noir - the highly stylized "romantification" of the underworld or netherworld being the appeal - doom, greed, and murder all "painted with light," to paraphrase John Alton. it made me think about modern attempts to make Film Noir, and how they always miss the mark. Perhaps they imagine Noir is about realism and grit when, as you have observed, the exact opposite is true.

Fine post.

PS: I agree that used correctly, Granger could fit the bill nicely. Yet, he always made me a bit uneasy. He always seemed somehow soft and perhaps a bit corrupted by weakness at the center.Mykal Bantahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12148489896145024134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1279530091641272518.post-48385471680699900802011-02-16T01:54:10.979-05:002011-02-16T01:54:10.979-05:00I agree, KC. An interesting man, I'm sure he'd cite numerous reasons as to the cause, but regardless when used in the right role he was one heckuva performer.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07715057178983752370noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1279530091641272518.post-33876328370965686862011-02-16T01:03:11.540-05:002011-02-16T01:03:11.540-05:00It surprises me that Farley Granger is not more wi...It surprises me that Farley Granger is not more widely recognized for the role he played in film noir. I think his battered innocent persona is deeply symbolic of the form.KChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17587905976811500791noreply@blogger.com
