It seems he lacked the confidence to do other things but I will always remember those B/W actioners at Paramount with his name billed above the title ;chainsmoking being rough with his leading lady and his tightlipped staccato delivery. At one stage it was planned for him to make a musical with Doris Day. This never eventuated .This was a pity. Perhaps Sue was not prepared to soften his image. All he lacked was height. Lets remember that Cagney Raft And Bogart and others were not tall. I felt that in Boy on a Dolphin he underplayed his role being resigned to supporting voluptuous Sophia Loren and Clifton Webb who had the best lines and had previously worked with director Jean Negulesco. In the circumstances I felt he performed quite well against the odds. He and Veronica Lake really did make movie magic together; and they had a lot in common; both suffered from alcoholism and depression; both died at the age of 50. Tragic. There was a history of mental illness in his family as well. I really want to see his version of "The Great Gatsby" (1949) and hope that more of his films will get the DVD treatment. He deserves more recognition; he was far more talented than he gave himself credit for.Muirmaidenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07974008758705690487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1279530091641272518.post-53861682587822265912016-05-01T11:31:37.492-04:002016-05-01T11:31:37.492-04:00Hi Paula - thanks for stopping in; I couldn't ...Hi Paula - thanks for stopping in; I couldn't agree with you more about Ladd's ability to carry a picture! However, I think Alan used his wife to play the "heavy" for him in turning down "Giant". I can't see Alan Ladd co-starring with Rock Hudson, a man younger and also as big as a tree. As a matter of fact, you'd have to be an Elizabeth Taylor fan to like that film, which (sorry)I'm not. In that movie, I like the people I'm not supposed to (James Dean and Mercedes McCambridge), but don't care for Rock and Liz. From everything I've read, Dean hated doing the part and as we know, he was killed trying to get to a car race, which was where he really wanted to be. In the case of "Giant", I think Ladd made the right decision. I just finished reading Beverly Linet's biography and wow! what a hideous childhood Alan Ladd had. It's really sad that his intense self-loathing just ate him alive, he was a fine actor. I must say, his wife Sue doesn't come off well in the biography, she seems to have been more about the money than the right parts (i.e. convincing Ladd to turn down Jet in "Giant" mostly because he would have been third-billed being the worst example) for her husband. I think he could have been a really fine character actor.
