What The Medium also seems to have in common w/film noir is its subject matter: a number of noirs have fake mediums in their stories - eg, Nightmare Alley, The Spiritualist (AKA Amazing Mr X), Murder, My Sweet. Your mention of how The Medium looks sometimes like a silent film and how its lighting expresses psychological states wld also link it w/German Expressionism, a stylistic source for film noir.
